Course description

The Elementary (A1) English course is designed for beginners to build foundational language skills based on the CEFR framework. Students learn to use essential vocabulary, basic grammar, and simple phrases to handle daily, predictable situations. The course focuses on introducing oneself, shopping, asking simple questions, and communicating basic needs, provided the speaker is slow and clear.

What will I learn?

  • Listening : Understand simple, standard speech and can recognise familiar words and very basic phrases concerning themselves, their family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.
  • Reading : Understand very short, simple texts, for example on notices and posters or in catalogues, pick up familiar names and basic phrases.
  • Spoken interaction : Interact in a simple way.  Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.
  • Spoken production : Use simple phrases and sentences to describe where they live and people they know.
  • Writing : Write a short, simple postcard, for example sending holiday greetings.  Fill in forms with personal details, for example entering their name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.

He/she can understand and use very frequently-used everyday expressions as well as simple phrases to meet immediate needs. He/she can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, things he/she has and people he/she knows.

A0/A1 English (Beginner/Elementary) Level A0/A1 corresponds to basic users of English who can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases.

The A1 and A2 tests are speaking and listening exams designed for immigration purposes. They are: Taken with a Home Office–approved provider. Focused only on communication skills (no reading or writing required)

Zero to A1 100-150 hours

The exam is deemed to have been passed if at least 60 points (60 % of the maximum point score) have been earned and if all sections of the exam have been completed.
